The Acapulco Central Market

The Central Market (Mercado Central) is the main market of Acapulco, the largest and the best stocked. Mercado Central has an area for meats, poultry, fish and seafood, and produce. Inside are some fruit and vegetable warehouses where the prices are very low if you know how to haggle or negotiate.

You can spend a couple hours touring the Central Market. You can get some great pics from this area.

El Mercado Central is the market where the local people use to sell more to the Mexicans then to the tourist. Yes, Mercado Municipal is a treasure or cultural experience. And what a wonderful people the Mexican people are.

They are smart, charming, happy, and above all industrious. You know the old expression, stop to smell the flowers! So, enjoy the flower market, enjoy the animals, the fish markets, and of course the many crafts made right before your eyes. Did you know that you can watch them as they make the Piñatas right there.

Baby sea turtles release

There are many places in Acapulco doing baby sea turtle releases along the ocean road at the ‘Acapulco Diamante’ area on the way to Bara Vieja. This palces are Rescue Camps that are operated by local environmentalists and they are trying to improve the turtles chances for survival.

In this tour you and your kids going to be a part of the ritual of release a sea turtle and help the nature to make a diference. Enjoy this magical experience. We are able to do this tour at any season of the year.

Swimming with dolphins

This is a truly interactive experience. Great fun for kids of all ages. Children will be thrilled by the rides in this water park, as well as the aquarium and the seal and dolphin show.

The Swimming session is not part of the Show, is a real interactive experience with dolphins.

Diego Rivera’s Mural

This popular tourist attraction is located in Acapulco Tradicional (the old section of the city) at the home of the late Dolores ‘Lola’ Olmedo Patiño (1908-2002) – who had the largest collection of Diego Rivera paintings in the world, was a long-time friend of his, and was also the woman to whom he proposed after the death of his wife Frida Kahlo (the controversial painter who died in 1954).

During the period 1956-1957, Rivera lived in Acapulco while recovering from cancer, and it was then that he created the works found here – before passing away himself in November of ’57. This house, currently for sale, represents a cultural heritage and is a living witness to the art of Diego Rivera in Acapulco.

If you have the time, stop by the estate which is located at Inalambrica #6 in the area between La Quebrada and the Sinfonía del Mar. There, visitors can freely view the 107′-long mural on the outside walls of Exekatlkalli (meaning House of the Winds), which is a mosaic sculpture-painting depicting the gods Quetzalcoatl, Tlaloc, and Coatlicue of the ancient Aztec culture. The house itself, however, is not open to the public.

Palma Sola Petroglyphs

Located deep in a forest high above Acapulco, the Palma Sola Archaeological Site is one of 12 known petro glyphs sites in the Acapulco area. Palma Sola is the most accessible and contains 18 petro glyphs dating from 200 BC to AD 600. Little is known about the people who created the drawings, which range from simple stick figures to elaborate scenes of ancient life in Acapulco.

A steep, sturdy trail winds 400m uphill past the petro glyphs, all marked by Spanish and English signs, and ending at a rewarding view of Acapulco Bay. Bring good hiking shoes and water.

You will drive for approximately 30 minutes to Veladero National Park, situated at a height of 1,000 feet, and which overlooks Acapulco Bay. Here you will find the ancient petroglyphs of Palma Sola, which date back over 2,500 years.

The Yope Indians, the area’s first inhabitants, created these unique rock carvings. To see these impressive petroglyphs, you must scale the large stone steps up a mountain trail. You’ll find the views of Acapulco Bay to be spectacular, so don’t forget to bring your camera!

San Diego Fort

The fort was intended to protect the main port of the western coast of Mexico, where the ship from China arrived delivering a lot of asian goods that would cross by land to Veracruz in the Gulf of Mexico and from there to Spain.

Through its 15 exhibition rooms or halls, the museum tries to show the most relevant moments in Acapulco’s history and the important role the fortress has played in the local dwellers lives.

For the general public, the museum offers information on events related with this significant place, the old fortress gives an account of its rich past, the culture of the first inhabitants of the region, the conquest of the Southern Seas, commerce with the Orient, piracy in the Pacific Ocean, the Mexican war of independence and other aspects relevant to the place itself.

Cliff Divers at La Quebrada

A must-see attraction in Acapulco, they charge $40 pesos per adult and $15 per child. I like that because the area is superclean and they’ve built different levels to make room for people to watch the dives. First show at 12:45pm, only one with daylight.

First show at nighttime starts at 7:30 with a brief movie shown against the cliff that gives you a little bit of the diving history and illustrates the many movies that had been shot there during the Golden Era of mexican movies, back in the 50′s.
